There is this English pub that I like to go to near my home. They have over 80 beers on tap and serve good bar-type food including common English dishes as bangers and mash, fish and chips, and shepherds pie. There was one dish that I saw that seemed out of place: Chicken Tikka Masala. Chicken tikka masala (not to be confused with chicken marsala) is a classic chicken dish in Indian cuisine. The word 'Tikka' means bits or pieces while the word 'Masala' means a mixture of spices. Chicken tikka masala is the unofficial dish of England because it was first developed in the UK and not India, a common misperception. That is the reason why you see chicken tikka masala commonly served over rice (usually basmati), roti, or naan bread (an Indian type of flat bread) in many English pubs. And now you know!
